DOILEY, wood, bailiwick of Chute Forest, in Hurstbourne Tarrant
Old English 'thick wood'. The word 'diger' is not on record, but it has good parallels in Continental Gmc languages. The expected modern form is hypothetical ''Diley'' which in Hampshire dialect would be 'Doiley'; speakers of the prestige dialect have not corrected this Hampshirism back.
